RIVERSIDE — The Riverside Public Library will stay open until 10 p.m. on weeknights starting next month, city officials said Tuesday.

The library now closes at 6 p.m., which many students and workers say is too early.

"People told us they wanted a quiet place to study after work," said Maria Lopez, the library's director.

The change will cost about $80,000 a year, according to the city. Most of the money will pay for two new staff members.

Some residents worry that the building's parking lot is not safe at night. The city said it plans to add more lights before the new hours begin.

The longer hours will be tested for six months. Officials will decide in the spring whether to keep them.
